What a Great Deal!

Every morning, when I check my e-mail, there is always a lot of “deals” that are sent to me. There are usually deals on facials, restaurants, hotels, etc… I usually automatically delete the deals because it’s distracting especially if I don’t need any of those things.
Yesterday, however, I clicked through the deals and something caught my eyes. There was a deal on toothbrushes! A pack of 6 toothbrushes was being offered for about $1 per brush. What a great deal. Toothbrushes are usually not that cheap. This is a national brand too. The choices were between soft or medium brushes.
My patients often ask me what type of toothbrush they should use. The answer is always “Soft, or Extra Soft”. Never “Medium” or “Hard”. I don’t know why they make medium or hard brushes anyway. As far as I’m concerned, the only use for hard or medium toothbrushes are for cleaning bathroom tiles. They are too stiff for brushing teeth. They do too much damage to the teeth. They wear away the enamel. That could result in sensitivity and painful teeth or more cavities. Once the enamel is gone, it does not grow back either. The damage is forever.
I had a patient that complained of sensitive teeth and when I asked, he said he was using a sensitive toothpaste. OK… but what about your toothbrush? He said it was a HARD toothbrush. What?? Not good, not good! He thought that by brushing harder with a hard toothbrush, he was getting his teeth cleaner.
Always use a soft or extra soft toothbrush, I’d rather you spend more time brushing with a gentler touch than brushing with a harder brush scrubbing away your teeth. Ouch!
If it’s a great deal （$1 a toothbrush
!）, just make sure you make the right choice （Buy the soft brushes!）
