The Vision Behind Her First New York Solo Exhibition
Soft light, a hint of breeze, and a quiet warmth—
Painter Nobuko Kawamura will hold her first solo exhibition in New York this fall. “Nobuko Kawamura First Solo NY Exhibition” will run for four days beginning October 23 at Tenri Gallery in Manhattan. Approximately 30 works are expected to be on display, including large paintings measuring roughly 64 by 51 inches.
An accomplished painter, Kawamura has held solo exhibitions at department stores and galleries throughout Japan for many years and has earned the support of numerous collectors.
At the heart of her work is a devotion to light.
“I want to paint pictures that are like opening a window in a room, letting in light and air,” she says.
Influenced by painters such as Monet and Corot, Kawamura has continued to depict the beauty of light in Japanese landscapes. Her paintings carry a wish to bring a little brightness and peace to the spaces and hearts of those who see them.
Exploring the Possibilities of Japanese Landscape Painting in New York
For Kawamura, this New York exhibition is more than an opportunity to expand overseas or build her reputation. Above all, she sees it as a challenge.
How will Japanese landscape paintings be received in New York, a city with a strong contemporary art scene? She admits to feeling uncertain.
“I get anxious before every solo exhibition. I’m always nervous about how many people will come and what they’ll think of the work.”
Even so, she decided to hold the exhibition because she wants people to see the paintings in person.
“There’s an atmosphere and a quality of light that photographs can’t convey. I really want people to experience the actual works.”
Indeed, the depth and subtle colors of Kawamura’s paintings cannot be fully appreciated on a screen. Standing before one of her large works can feel like stepping into the landscape itself.
How will she convey the light and atmosphere of Japan’s landscapes in New York, a crossroads of the world?

Nobuko Kawamura, painter
Kawamura’s work has been selected for the Nitten exhibition. She is currently an associate member of the Issuikai art association and an associate committee member of the Kensuikai art association. She has held solo exhibitions at department stores and galleries across Japan. Influenced by Monet, Corot, and other Impressionists, she continues to paint Japanese landscapes with light as her central theme.
